Project Warmth...

When we first moved into our big old house we had know idea how much it would cost to keep it warm, after our first winter we had a massively rude awakening...a huge chunk of change to heat of huge chunk of a house. So we decided we would try a woodstove in the living room just to help out with the cost and add a little ambiance...not to mention the fact that a hundred years ago a woodstove actually stood in the very same spot...bringing back a little history felt right as well. We were pretty sure that we wanted to have a base beneath the woodstove that would look almost as though it were built at the same time the house was...unfortuneatly every mason we talked to refused to do the base the way we designed it...they knew modern design and modern materials and everything they drew up screamed "modern". After the fourth Mason it became pretty clear that we were going to have to do this project ourselves if we were going to get it the way we wanted it...so we trekked out into the woods and found a "sh@#" load of fieldstone and we bought a few fake pieces as well (to keep the over all wieght down) and we did the deal ourselves...it may not be perfect for everyones tastes but it is perfect for ours and we are extremely happy with how it turned out...and it is kind of funny to mention that one of the men that said it couldn't be done has seen it finished and was very impressed with it in fact he is thinking of doing one in his own home...not so bad for a couple of novices...and just as a side note..first winter with the woodstove and it has already nearly paid for itself gotta love that...

Just thought I should mention..it isn't quite finished yet ..we are still waiting for warmer weather so that we can stain and poly the vintage red oak (kruze salvaged from the barn loft) shelving that Kruze made to go up along the top line of the back walls...I will post pics when it gets finished later this spring...

Looks beautiful...finding myself somewhere between Shakespeare's fifth and sixth age ("And then the justice in fair round belly with good capon lined, with eyes severe and beard of formal cut, full of wise saws and modern instances; and so he plays his part. The six age slips into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon, with spectacles on nose and pouch on side; his youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide for his shrunk shrank..."), I've a story for just about everything.

My wife and I had to put wood stoves in our home in Maine, well, the vendor installed 'em, though they don't look nearly as nice as what you and Kruze have done. The weather on Long Lake is rather severe in the winter, so it's wood stoves and heatolaters.

It looks wonderful. Loved the design. I've always favored brick and stone fireplaces. Have you seen those design shows where they take that beautiful masonry on a fireplace and replace it with flat paint? Yuck! They look so plain and lack of character. Hate that!

You and Kruze did a wonderful job on the base...it looks original to the house like you wanted. Wish I could have spent a few more days sitting in that living room chatting with you this winter...it was so warm and relaxing!!

WOW! you are both incredibly talented people. I love it! Isn't it a great feeling to do something when someone else tells you it can't be done? A little side note, I did think your post about 10 things you may not know about me was cool, I am just too dense to realize that you wanted us to post something back on the comments section. I'll think of something and write it in. I think I checked your site when I was at work and didn't have enough time to comment.

Thank You!! You are all so sweet we had know idea what anyone else would think...its really nice to know that other people think it looks good too we were a little afraid that it would look rustic and more appropriate in a log home but once it was finished it seemed to fit in perfectly with the rest of the house. Thanx again everyone you guys are awesome!!
